He is in a constant state of stage fright, he says, because he never knows what part of his life he is going to have to act in next.īilly Pilgrim, the protagonist of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, is set loose in time, and visits scenes from earlier and later in his life. Example #3īilly is spastic in time, has no control over where he is going next, and the trips aren’t necessarily fun. Some characters are able to makes prophecies and predict the future. Gabriel García Márquez uses many elements of the supernatural and magical realism in his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, one of which is an elasticity of time. ( One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez) Every year during the month of March a family of ragged gypsies would set up their tents near the village, and with a great uproar of pipes and kettledrums they would display new inventions. The world was so recent that many things lacked names, and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point. At that time Macondo was a village of twenty adobe houses, built on the bank of a river of clear water that ran along a bed of polished stones, which were white and enormous, like prehistoric eggs. Examples of Flash Forward in Literature Example #1 Some postmodern novels also use flash forwards to challenge the traditional structure of the novel. None of us is able to see into the future so perfectly as to understand exactly what will come to pass, and neither would we trust a standard narrative that would alter the rules of time so as to show exactly what the future will look like. There must be an element of flexibility when it comes to time and chronology in a narrative that features flash forwards. Examples of flash forward are generally only found in certain genres, however. Foreshadowing results from more authorial control, but is still found in many different genres. This is because we all have flashbacks in normal life-it’s a regular occurrence for most of us to see something and be reminded of something else that has already happened. ♦ Significance of Flash Forward in Literatureįlash forward examples are much less common than foreshadowing or flashback examples.
